PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), sold under the brand name Teflon, is the synthetic fluoropolymer used to create non-stick coatings on cookware. When PTFE-coated pans are heated above 500°F the coating begins to off-gas toxic fumes. These fumes cause polymer fume fever in humans and are acutely lethal to birds. PTFE is a member of the broader PFAS chemical family. While manufacturers have removed PFOA from the manufacturing process, PTFE itself remains a fluoropolymer with significant environmental persistence concerns.
