Chemical flame retardants are added to furniture foam, mattresses, electronics, car seats, and textiles to meet flammability standards. The most problematic are halogenated flame retardants — chlorinated and brominated compounds that accumulate in body fat and breast milk. Research links them to thyroid hormone disruption, neurodevelopmental delays in children, reduced IQ, and cancer. Many were phased out after being identified as toxic, only to be replaced by structurally similar chemicals with similar concerns.
